City of Vancouver Tree Trimming Schedule: What Homeowners Should Know

The City of Vancouver maintains public trees and vegetation on city rights-of-way, while private-property tree care is the owner’s responsibility. City vegetation work is scheduled by area and season, and private tree pruning follows a different process.

According to the City of Vancouver, planned vegetation management on city rights-of-way generally begins in late May in the northeast and proceeds south, finishing on the west side in late August. The City notes that dates are guidelines and that this program does not include Park Board-managed vegetation.

Public trees vs private trees

Start by confirming who owns or manages the tree and whether the work involves public property, utilities, a strata, a shared property line or a regulated private tree. Those details can change who must approve the work.

When the City schedules vegetation work

For larger or hazardous trees, ask the provider to explain access, equipment, rigging, cleanup, disposal, stump work and any permit or utility coordination that may be needed.

What to do for a private-property tree

Get the scope and price in writing and confirm credentials and insurance before authorizing work. If a tree presents an immediate danger to people, roads or utilities, keep clear and contact the appropriate emergency authority or utility.
